For the money the Gentle Monster is the best blues harp on the planet. I've been playing harp for decades, first, second, and third position. I play acoustic solo, accompanying myself on guitar, and amplified in a band. If I had only one harp I could buy, and I've bought most of them, it would be the Gentle Monster.
It comes down to the wooden comb. Plastic, metal, and composite just don't give as pure and warm a tone. Of course there's one very very famous wooden-combed harp out there (in fact, Hohner makes three versions of the Marine Band), and while the original Marine Band has an amazing tone, the longevity and volume don't equal the Monster. Ive bought something like 12 Monsters in the last two years since discovering them, and only one hasn't played great straight out of the box. SO MANY harps, wooden-combed or otherwise, need additional set up after purchase, I'm talking about playability. They have sticky notes and don't draw well in places. I would much rather pay an extra $10 for a harp that is actually set up upon arrival rather than play hit or miss on playability, and this problem is not confined to cheap harps.
But the Monster is economical to boot. I bought a different rosewood-combed harp from an online shop recently, and it was twice the price as the Monster, and it didn't play any better. Rosewood is a great tonewood evidenced by the fact that it's used for premium guitar back and sides, and in a harp it's no different. The tone is warm, slightly bassy, with excellent volume and projection. And while I've worn a few Monsters out, it's taken hours and hours of playing to do that.
I have only two criticisms of the Monster. The first is that the footprint on the mouth is taller than on a Marine Band; I love the shorter footprint of the classic. The second is that JDR doesn't make all 12 keys in the Monster; I also need the Ab, Db, and Eb. But for the money you can't beat them. JDR's North is a good harp for even less money for obscure keys, but the plastic comb doesn't give the warmth of the monster, and they don't last as long. In short, buy an A or C Monster and see for yourself. And they seem to be perpetually on sale!

Visually this wood comb harmonica really stands out among my collection of blues harps. It produces a nice warm tone blues harmonica timbre from the natural rosewood comb. I really appreciate the stainless?steel outer covers. They resist scuffs and scratches from being tossed inside my instrument bag. The overall finish feels premium. It sounds wonderful for casual playing and also looks nice displayed on my shelf. A solid pick if you care about craftsmanship.

Solid construction, airtight, easy to bend and overbend, in tune and sounds great.

I picked up this blues harmonica mostly for home recording work. As a wood comb harmonica, it delivers that sought?after warm tone blues harmonica quality through my microphone. What impresses me most is the slotted?cover design. It helps even out reed vibration, so high and low notes translate evenly to recordings. No muddy low?end or thin?sounding high notes. It captures soulful blues phrasing really well, I��ve used it on several of my demo tracks already.
